Spring cleaning is a big task, but love it or hate it, it needs to be done. If you really dread the chore, you can, of course, hire in a professional cleaning company to help you complete the task, or you can try to make it more bearable and much more fun by putting on some motivational music to get you through. Now, we don’t necessarily mean George Formby’s When I’m Cleaning Windows or that you try to recreate the famous cleaning scenes from Queen’s I Want to Break Free video – but if you think they’ll help you to get through your spring cleaning, go for it!
In fact, cleaning product brand Dr Beckmann released a list last year of the UK’s favourite songs to clean to – which was featured in House Beautiful – providing some great inspiration for what to add to your housework playlist. Dr Beckmann found that almost three-quarters (72 percent) of us like to listen to music while we clean, with upbeat pop music the most popular genre. You can clean to the beat, dance as you go to burn extra calories or simply enjoy some of your favourite tunes as you work.
The nation’s favourite cleaning songs
Top of the list was Crazy in Love by Beyonce, and it’s easy to see why, as its upbeat rhythm is irresistible to dance to. Channel all of that energy into your cleaning, moving your body as you go and the task of spring cleaning your house will be over so much more quickly than if you were tackling it in silence.
Next in the cleaning charts was No Diggity by Blackstreet in second place, followed by Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake in third. All of these songs are great to sing along and dance to, meaning they can turn your spring cleaning into a fun workout for your vocal chords, your body and your duster all at the same time. Music is the one boost that can transform a dull cleaning routine into a fun activity.
Just Dance by Lady Gaga was named the nation’s fourth favourite song to clean to, with Estelle’s American Boy coming in fifth place.
In sixth place was the slightly more rocky I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys, perfect to put on while you’re doing some intense scrubbing.
Seventh place went to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA came in eighth, Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars in ninth and Cyndi Lauper’s singalong anthem Girls Just Wanna Have Fun completed the top ten. Of course, housework isn’t just for ‘girls’, but Lauper’s tune is still a great one to clean to.
Our cleaning playlist suggestions
We’re all motivated by different types of music, and it’s unlikely that Dr Beckmann’s top ten will make spring cleaning more enjoyable for all of us. But we’d like to add a few suggestions of our own into the mix, like Pharrell Williams’ Happy, which is one of the most cheerful and upbeat songs around in our opinion, making it ideal for getting you going with the housework.
Tina Turner’s version of Proud Mary is another one that’s super-motivating and will make tackling your house from top to bottom fly by much more quickly. And surely when you’re onto the final room of your spring clean, you absolutely have to put on Europe’s The Final Countdown as you tackle the very last bits of dirt.
With a little help from some motivational music, the task of spring cleaning will be over with before you know it.
